Career Counselling for LLM

LLM from Foreign Universities and Scholarship Opportunities

On 30th January 2021, the Association for Parivartan of Nation (APNA) hosted a career counselling session on “LLM from Foreign Universities and Scholarship Opportunities”. The session, moderated by Ms Saima Anjum, law student at Jamia Millia Islamia and active member of several human rights organisations, featured Dr Niharika Salar, Assistant Professor at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. Dr Salar completed her LLM in Intellectual Property & Technology Law at the National University of Singapore.

The prerecorded lecture was streamed on YouTube and has since been viewed by more than 500 participants across cities, making it one of APNA’s one of widely accessed learning sessions. The session opened with an inspiring take on the value of pursuing higher studies abroad. Dr Salar emphasised that international education broadens not only academic horizons but also personal perspectives:

“When you sit in a classroom with people from ten different countries, you are not just learning the law- you are learning the world.”

Students learnt that foreign universities offer exposure to diverse cultures, teaching methods, and analytical frameworks, as well as specialised courses often unavailable in Indian universities due to resource limitations. One participant, Iqra Ilham, a law student from Delhi, reflected:

“I had never thought of specialisations like Technology Law or Sports Arbitration being options for me. This session made me realise there’s a whole world of opportunities if we are willing to step out of our comfort zone.”

Dr Salar candidly acknowledged that applying to foreign universities is not easy, describing it as a “tedious but rewarding” process. The discussion also touched upon critical concerns for aspiring students – the availability of scholarships. Dr Salar pointed out that numerous opportunities exist, not only for graduates of National Law Universities (NLUs) but also for those from other institutions, provided they present strong applications. “Scholarships do not look at the name of your college alone- they look at your story, your commitment, and how well you can communicate why you belong in that programme,” she explained.

Participants were also introduced to a resource pool of websites and platforms dedicated to funding opportunities and guidance for international study. The session ended on a motivational note, urging students to stay resilient in the face of challenges. Dr Salar reminded participants, “The journey may be long, but every application is a step towards reshaping your future. The only way to fail is to not try.”
